Nineteen artistically decorated benches embellished with unique materials based on the theme "Let the Games Begin" are now on display along Oak Park Avenue through Oct. 1 as part of the 11th annual Benches on the Avenue public art project.
Admirers had a chance to meet the artists who created the benches during Meet the Artists Night on June 14. Artists were posted at their benches along Oak Park Avenue to meet the community, discuss their work and answer questions about the creative process.
Meet the Artists Night was held in conjunction with the Music in the Plaza series, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. every other Saturday in Zabrocki Plaza, 17375 S. Oak Park Ave. The benches are located just a short stroll from the concert area.
Winners of the 2014 Benches on the Avenue project were announced during the Sept. 6 Music in the Plaza event in Zabrocki Plaza. Winners included:
The judging panel included Karen Wegrzyn, executive director of the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce; Mona Serpe, president of the Tinley Park Garden Club; Robbyn Yuen, decorator at Creative Cakes; Regina Ziemann, an adjunct art instructor at Moraine Valley Community College; and Wendy Bumphis, president of the Tinley Park Rotary Club.
